"Event photography is more than just snapping shots; it's about understanding the moments that matter and bringing them to life through the lens of experience."
Introduction:
Let me take you back to the grandeur of Brisbane City Hall where I found myself at a ladies' charity lunch, not as a photographer but as a guest seeking a simple photo with my mum and friends. What followed was a revelation—an eye-opening glimpse into the world of event photography, through the eyes of 30 years of experience specialising in events and people.
Here are 3 lessons:
Amidst the bustle, I observed photographers snapping away, taking so many photos. It dawned on me—a photograph without genuine engagement is merely a snapshot frozen in time.
As I watched, I noticed that most photographs had no simple interactions—a smile, a word of encouragement, a genuine moment of connection. Notice something special about that person, a colourful dress, fabulous hair do, love your smile. People love compliments.
In an age of endless digital images, I realized the importance of discernment. Each click of the shutter should be intentional, each frame thoughtfully composed to tell a story. The photographers while up to speed with technology and a QR code on the screen with all the images available to view on our digital devices, perhaps as you take the photograph look at the back of the screen, delete that first test photo where everyone is still fixing their hair, looking at each other, not ready. Check your camera settings, especially if you are not going to edit but simply upload the hundreds, and hundreds of images.
What it’s not, especially at a ladies event where women are trying to empower other women, don’t take photos of peoples backs and bums…. I have never seen so many behinds in a photo in all my life. A smile tells a story not a butt… :)
So, to all aspiring photographers, remember—there's more to event photography than meets the eye. Embrace the lessons, hone your craft, find your niche and event photography is not just taking a photo it is about engaging with people.
